Hannes Myburgh, eighth generation owner of Meerlust, graduated from the University of Stellenbosch with a Bachelor of Arts degree majoring in French and English in 1982, before studying winemaking at Geisenheim in Germany. Hannes worked at Chateau Lafite in France and Von Oetinger in Germany.
The Managing Director
Albie De Waal is a graduate of The University of Stellenbosch where he completed a BSc and MSc in Agriculture before going on to do his MBA. A successful career followed at Triomf and Sasol until his retirement in 2000. In 2003 he was coaxed out of retirement and joined Meerlust. The wine industry boasts many Springbok rugby players and Albie is no exception having played for the Springboks against the French in 1967. He is assisted by Corrie Ireland – Manager Finance and Administration and her team of Yolanda Joubert (procurement) and Loujean Thebus (financial controller).
Wim Truter was appointed Cellar Master/Manager at Meerlust in May 2020. Wim holds a degree in Chemistry, Oenology and Viticulture from the University of Stellenbosch. He then pursued the international MSc Vintage qualification in Vine, Wine and Terroir Management that included stints studying at the Ecole Superieur d’Agriculture, Angers, France, the Universita Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, Piacenza, Italy and the Universitat Politecnica de Valencia in Valencia Spain. He is assisted by winemaker Altus Treurnicht and the cellar team and in the vineyards by viticulturist Izak Basson and his team.
The Marketing Manager
Eddie Turner joined Meerlust in 2010 after 25 years with Anglo American Farms where he was responsible for the marketing of Boschendal and Vergelegen wines. He completed a Bachelor of Commerce degree at the University of Pretoria majoring in Business Economics. He is assisted by Esmé Nothanagel (export logistics) and Trish Lombard (wine shop).
