meerlust wine San Francisco Chronicle

South Africa is the world's eighth largest wine producer. White wines have been widely available for several years, and now a few reds are showing up on shelves.

The red Pinotage grape, unique to South Africa, was developed in 1925. Cabernet Sauvignon and red Rhone varieties, especially Syrah, are also widely grown.

There were many good wines among more than 50 South African reds tasted. Frustratingly, the majority are not yet available in California - confirmed by days of searching and discussion with importers and distributors, though at least one producer has a major presence.

The following South African reds should be available, though not necessarily in the vintage listed.

2004 Meerlust Rubicon Stellenbosch Red Bordeaux Blend ($25) "Meerlust," which is German for "pleasure of the sea," is a famous South African wine estate. It was purchased by the Myburgh family in 1756. This is an elegant, Old World-style wine, with concentrated dark fruit, creme brulee, cigar box and spice hints integrated with savory loam. Lovely balance, lengthy finish. 63 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 27 percent Merlot and 10 percent Cabernet Franc. (Importer: Maison Marques & Domaines)
