Renowned artist William Kentridge collaborates with top South African wine producers to fund performances of The Magic Flute for those less fortunate.

Internationally acclaimed artist, William Kentridge, in cooperation with Rand Merchant Bank, which will bring the production of The Magic Flute to South Africa in September, has embarked on a unique way to raise funds so that the play can be seen by previously disadvantaged children during free matinee performances.

As part of this initiative Kentridge offered six of South Africa's top wine producers the opportunity to print the selected Magic Flute images on their labels in order to help cover the substantial cost of the matinee performances. The cellars participating in this fund-raising effort are Boekenhoutskloof, Hamilton Russel Vineyards, Meerlust, Quoin Rock, Rustenberg and Tokara.

Each cellar has compiled a reserve wine selection - in quantities varying from 50 to 500 cases - to be sold under the cellar's name, but with its own exclusive Kentridge label originating from the many images the artist has sketched for the set of The Magic Flute.

The Kentridge editions will be sold at a premium price so that each estate can contribute R50 000 to the cost of the special morning performances.

Kentridge's version of The Magic Flute, Mozart's last opera, has been playing on European stages for the past two years and the unique set design is being applauded across the continent.
