“At Meerlust, our Merlot has always been seen as a mini Rubicon,” observes winemaker Chris Williams, referring to the Stellenbosch estate’s iconic blend. “If you couldn’t get Rubicon, you were offered the Merlot instead. I’m now working hard to distinguish it as a fine wine in its own right.”

On 27 March, in Verona Italy, the Roll of Honour Award was awarded to Hannes Myburgh owner of Meerlust Estate. In keeping with the tradition of the award, now in its 11th year, it is presented to personalities in the wine industry whose contribution to the wine industry internationally has been significant.

The Meerlust 2001 Rubicon has been voted number 27 on the Wine Enthusiast Top 100 wines for 2006. The Rubicon 2001 was made by the previous Cellar Master at Meerlust, Giorgio Dalla Cia, who was responsible for creating the first commercial Rubicon blend in 1980 together with Nicolaas Myburgh, the father of the current owner, Hannes Myburgh.
